The central Philippines is suffering the impacts of Super Typhoon Haiyan, locally named Yolanda. Humanitarian Response (Philippines), provided by UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), indicated that initial needs assessments are underway and are prioritizing Shelter, Food, Health, WASH, Camp Management and Logistics. According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), Haiyan is far from over and is forecast to reach Vietnam Sunday, local time.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Management (AHA Centre) is tracking Haiyan’s development using the recently deployed Disaster Monitoring Response System (DMRS) and is increasing early warning activities for the region, releasing valuable “Flash Updates” on their website and via social media. Additionally, the Government of Vietnam is utilizing a customized system, named VinAWARE, to monitor the hazards activity as well. Both systems are customized versions of PDC’s DisasterAWARE platform.
PDC has also activated in response, providing decision support and situational awareness products via DisasterAWARE. PDC will continue to monitor Haiyan, and will supply updates through its products and services for the duration of the event.
